Tony L. Continues His 2026 Musical Run With New Single “For My Sanity”

The Kingston-born, Trenton-raised musician draws on a lifetime of experience as his independent catalog continues to grow.
September 11, 2026: Independent artist and multi-instrumentalist Tony L. is back with new music, releasing his latest single, “For My Sanity,” today. The new record adds another chapter to what has become an active period of releases for an artist whose music has consistently been shaped by life experience, perseverance, and a determination to keep creating.
“For My Sanity” follows Tony L.’s recent releases “SMILE...all I need,” “That’s Just Who You Are,” and “Over & Over Again,” continuing a steady stream of new material from the veteran musician. While Tony has not explained the story behind the new single, its arrival fits naturally within a catalog he describes as being drawn directly from his own journey.
“My music comes from life experiences, some pain, some joy, some determination and a ton of hard work,” Tony says.
That perspective carries considerable weight when looking at the road that brought him here.
Born in Kingston, Jamaica, and raised in Trenton, New Jersey, Tony was introduced to music during his school years there. An important early influence was Raymond Earl of the legendary funk group Instant Funk, who gave the aspiring musician his first bass and would check in between his travels to teach him and monitor his progress.
Tony eventually formed his first band, The Funkateers, and began writing original material, including “Bring Your Body To The Party,” a song he would later release. His musical development continued at Trenton High School under the instruction of music educators Tommy Grice and Tommy Passerella.
But Tony L.’s story would eventually take a significant turn away from music.
After high school, he entered the U.S. Army, although music was never far away. While stationed at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, he became involved with The Mellow Madness Band. The group experienced an early taste of industry success, securing a recording agreement with Catawba Records and representation through Hit Attraction Booking Agency. When that chapter ended, life and military service became the priority again.
Tony later joined the Army Reserve while continuing to perform with bands and pursue music when circumstances allowed. Following the September 11 attacks, he returned to active-duty service. When his military career concluded in February 2013, he decided to place music back at the center of his life.
That decision marked the emergence of Tony L. as the recording artist audiences know today.
His journey has also included navigating physical limitations, something Tony approaches with the same philosophy that has shaped much of his career: keep moving forward.
“Dealing with physical limitations can be a struggle, but then again life is a struggle,” he explains. “The only way to see things is to look forward and let nothing hold you down.”
That history provides an important backdrop for Tony L.’s current creative output. Rather than being a newcomer attempting to establish a musical identity, he brings decades of musicianship, military service, setbacks, rebuilding, and lived experience into his work.
A New Chapter With “For My Sanity”
With “For My Sanity,” Tony L. adds another recording to an increasingly diverse independent catalog. His previous releases have moved through funk, rock, soul, jazz, and groove-driven territory while maintaining a common thread: music grounded in musicianship and personal experience. And that makes the title of the latest release particularly intriguing.
Without Tony defining the song for the listener, “For My Sanity” can speak for itself. What is clear is that it arrives from an artist who has repeatedly described music as something that remained present through virtually every stage of his life, even when careers, circumstances and responsibilities pulled him in other directions. More than a decade after deciding it was finally time to pursue music again fully, Tony L. continues doing exactly that: writing, recording and releasing.
“For My Sanity” by Tony L. is out now.
