The Obama Foundation announced the grand opening of the Obama Presidential Center, which will officially open to the public on June 19, 2026, with a free three-day celebration running through June 21. The opening weekend will feature live music, dance performances, family activities, food vendors, art exhibits, storytelling, sports programming, garden experiences, public talks, and guided tours designed to engage visitors of all ages.
The Center's broader mission is to promote civic engagement, education, culture, wellness, and community connection. Summer 2026 programming will include:
* The "You Are America" series celebrating America's 250th anniversary.
* "The People's Fourth" Independence Day celebration.
* Biweekly garden events in partnership with the Urban Growers Collective.
* A public birthday celebration for Barack Obama on August 4.
* A 10-week wellness walking and running program for adults aged 50 and older.
* Talks, performances, and special events featuring artists, thought leaders, and community changemakers.
The Center will also expand youth programming through partnerships with After School Matters and the Chicago Public Library, offering sports, media, leadership, and career-exploration opportunities for teens. Meanwhile, the Obama Foundation will continue its national and global leadership initiatives through programs such as Girls Opportunity Alliance and My Brother's Keeper Alliance.
Overall, the announcement positions the Obama Presidential Center as more than a museum or library; it is intended to serve as a year-round community hub focused on leadership, civic participation, culture, education, health, and social impact on Chicago's South Side and beyond.
