Justin Hicks is a quietly daring vocalist and songwriter whose debut album, Man of Style, turns singing into a form of meditation, storytelling, and emotional research. His voice carries vulnerability and mythic imagination, crafting genre-bending portraits of Black life in a country that often misunderstands itself. The lead single, “Poly,” inspired by a fleeting bar conversation about the kinds of relationships people choose, captures his tragic-disco-Philly-soul-meets-Suicide sonic palette, exemplifying his willingness to take lyrical and emotional risks. Recorded in just two days with longtime collaborators Meshell Ndegeocello and Chris Bruce, the album hovers on the edges of folk, R&B, gospel, and avant-garde textures. Instead of tidy resolutions, Hicks writes songs that feel like poems, dreams, and unanswered questions, full of wit, warmth, pain, and play.
Born in the Midwest to creatively frustrated but artistically driven parents, Hicks grew up believing music could bend the arc of the world, even in subtle ways. His work evokes narrative intimacy, inspired by Marvin Gaye, Roberta Flack, Jeff Buckley, and Moses Sumney, yet remains distinctly his own, a sound that invites listeners not to consume, but to participate. A two-time Grammy winner for collaborations with Ndegeocello and a frequent partner to artists across theater, visual art, and experimental performance, Hicks continues to expand what songwriting and singing can do. Rather than chase trends or spectacle, he builds lasting intimacy through depth, ambiguity, and truth-telling. With Man of Style, Hicks claims a space for music that lives with you, takes care of you, and honors the complexity of being alive.
