Jisu Jung Releases Baroque In Blue, a Classical-Jazz Fusion Journey [Interview]

Pianist and composer Jisu Jung unveils her latest album, Baroque In Blue, a bold exploration of classical and jazz fusion. Following her debut crossover project, "Who Am I," this release marks her second venture into genre-blending territory and her first under Korean independent label Wowsan Records. Featuring a unique quartet of piano, saxophone, cello, and viola, Jung reimagines the sonic landscapes of Baroque structure and jazz improvisation in a cohesive, modern context.

Known for her evolution from a classical prodigy to a jazz innovator, Jung uses "Baroque In Blue, " to continue reshaping musical boundaries. The album opens with inventive reinterpretations of jazz standards, such as Charlie Parker's "Donna Lee" and "Billie's Bounce," showcasing Romantic, Impressionist, and modern influences. Original compositions such as "Class Ends Too Late" and the reflective "White Prayer" deepen the album's emotional and musical range. At the same time, the title track embodies Jung's philosophy of disciplined freedom — where structure and spontaneity coexist.

Joined by saxophonist Soojung Lee, cellist Kanghyun Lee, and violist Hyeonjin Jung, the ensemble delivers a rich, textured performance that highlights each musician's voice. With Baroque In Blue, Jung offers more than a genre experiment — she shares a personal artistic manifesto. "Music is like a palette," she says. "A medium where different colors can blend and create something new."
