Interview with Mr. Sam: From Memphis Roots to Global Grooves

Born Sam Fallie in Memphis, Tennessee, Mr. Sam’s musical journey began early, shaped by a childhood split between Memphis and Los Angeles. It was in LA where he first discovered his passion for music, a spark that followed him back to Memphis and into his high school choir, where his talent quickly stood out. After graduation, he formed several groups, including Mellow Mystics, Naked Truth Band, and Perfectionist, that, while short-lived, became stepping stones to something greater. A defining moment came when the late legendary Allen Jones, producer and manager for the Bar-Kays, recognized Mr. Sam’s songwriting gift and brought him on as a staff writer, setting the stage for a prolific career.

Widely compared to songwriting greats such as Homer Banks, Lionel Richie, and Babyface, Mr. Sam has penned an impressive catalog of hits across Southern Soul, R&B, and beyond. His credits include chart-topping songs for the Bar-Kays, J. Blackfoot, Lacee, OB Buchana, Sheba Potts Wright, Ms. Genii, and many others, with his global hit “Roll It Roll It” reaching iTunes chart success alongside icons like Beyoncé and Bruno Mars. In recent years, he released multiple EPs, delivered high-energy live performances, crossed into country and gospel music, and teamed up with Memphis rap legend Al Kapone on the 2025 line-dance anthem “Work the Middle.” A devoted church member, sobriety advocate, and now stage actor, Mr. Sam continues to evolve, proving his artistry is as deep as it is enduring.

In this special episode of the Muzilog Magazine Podcast, we sit down with Southern Soul powerhouse Mr. Sam to unpack a career built on faith, resilience, and timeless songwriting. From his early days discovering music in Los Angeles to writing hits for some of the genre’s most respected names, Mr. Sam shares the stories behind the songs that shaped his legacy, and the lessons that shaped the man.

With humor, humility, and unmistakable soul, Mr. Sam reminds us that longevity in music isn’t about chasing trends, it’s about staying true to your roots while never being afraid to grow. This is an episode you don’t want to miss.
