New York-based singer-songwriter Cassandra Jenkins announces her upcoming instrumental concept album My Light, My Massage Parlor, out digitally on August 14 and physically on September 5, 2025, via Dead Oceans. The new record follows Jenkins’ signature path of introspective, experimental soundscapes, crafted in collaboration with longtime creative partner Michael Coleman. Featuring a rich palette of instruments—from a nine-foot Steinway to wind chimes and crickets—the album acts as a meditative, cinematic counterpart to her earlier lyrical works, delving into alternate emotional landscapes imagined from the other side of the recording studio glass.
The album builds on Jenkins’ ongoing exploration of what she calls her "spa era," offering a playful yet poignant take on relaxation and vulnerability. While largely instrumental, the album features two brief appearances of Jenkins’ voice, including on the lead single “Only One,” where she muses: “Stick figure Sisyphus, behind massage parlor window glass, how long will this pain in my chest last?” The vinyl edition presents a minimalist listening experience, while the digital release includes a Dolby Atmos mix that weaves binaural audio, ambient recordings from Manhattan, and psychoacoustic elements to envelop the listener in Jenkins’ surreal, restorative world.
My Light, My Massage Parlor follows Jenkins’ acclaimed 2024 release My Light, My Destroyer, further showcasing her evolution as a multidimensional artist. Known for blending folk, ambient pop, and sound design with poetic lyricism, Jenkins has built a career out of exploring emotional and cosmic dualities. Whether through her solo work or past collaborations with artists like Purple Mountains and Eleanor Friedberger, Jenkins continues to shape a deeply human sonic universe—one where pain and peace coexist, and curiosity is a guiding force.
