Montreal quartet, Penny Diving, will release their debut single, “Stella”, this Friday, November 17 and have premiered the video today via Indie 88 – share via YouTube. Penny Diving is the new project from songwriter Chantal Ambridge (vocals/guitar) formerly of The Muscadettes, who with partner Thomas Augustin (guitar/keys), twin sister Kathleen Ambridge (bass) and Jonathan Lafrance (drums), have been gigging around their hometown the past year, most recently during POP Montreal. They will make their Quebec City debut on November 30 at Sous-sol du Cercle.
Of the single, Chantal stated: The writing process is intuitive and telepathic almost, and by being this close to one another, it can only enhance the creative output. With “Stella” the pieces quickly fell together, out of the sky, and into my lap. We wanted the video to portray dreamlike visions, because I think a lot of processing happens in dreams, in your subconscious, and if you can somehow tap into that, you can tap into the bigger picture. Bridging the gap between the tangible and intangible.
While The Muscadettes captured the sunny, surf-garage rock of Chantal and Kathleen’s childhood California home, Chantal did not feel it was truly where her heart was musically. With Penny Diving, Chantal is the sole songwriter, delving into a sonically darker, but richer palette of distorted guitars, droning keys, with a driving rhythm section, propelling the tunes forward. The group blends a touch of post-punk with melancholy pop - golden shoegaze rays warming up their stark winter skies.
Penny Diving entered the studio earlier this year with producers Adrian Popovich (Solids, Priestess, The High Dials) and Joseph Donovan (The Dears, Sam Roberts, Lisa Leblanc), helping to bring their vision to light. “Stella” is a first taste from their debut album, due in 2018. More shows to be announced in the weeks ahead.
